To be honest, I'd eventually like to post Instructables that I've actually tried to build myself, but for now, this will have to do. I like the idea of an Arduino-based anything because Arduinos are incredibly easy to use and have a huge user base that can help you if you run into any problem (at least problems involving the Arduino).
Here is an Arduino-based laser-cutter and engraver, first featured on Instructables, then ended up as a Kickstarter campaign that was very successfully funded. I find it particularly cool that the creator let's people build it on their own (no intellectual property), uses all open source software, but is able to make money off of building them for people who don't have the time to build one themselves. This is the business model of the future.
